چکیده

BACKGROUND Neopterin is produced by human macrophages/monocytes when stimulated with interferon-gamma. Production of neopterin is found in serum, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and urine of patients with infections by viruses, intracellular bacteria and parasites, autoimmune diseases, malignant tumors and patients in allograft rejection episodes. METHODS In this study, the level of neopterin was determined in serum samples obtained from patients infected with Shigella (all four species) and healthy individuals. The study population comprised of 14 patients infected with Shigella and 14 normal controls. Serum neopterin was measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS The mean of serum neopterin concentration was 36.32 ± 9.71 nmol/L among patients infected with Shigella and 2.88 ± 0.77 nmol/L in the control group. The mean serum neopterin levels were significantly higher in the test group as compared to the normal group (p = 0.002). CONCLUSION This study revealed that neopterin was elevated in patients infected with Shigella.

Serum neopterin levels in HIV infected patients with & without tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE Three categories of prognostic markers are best documented as having significance in relation to prognosis of HIV infection. These include HIV viral load, CD4 T-cell levels and plasma levels of soluble markers of immune activation. The plasma activation markers, like neopterin, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukins etc., are products of cytokine activity a...

Elevated serum lactoferrin and neopterin are associated with postoperative infectious complications in patients with acute traumatic spinal cord injury

INTRODUCTION Several studies have shown that lactoferrin (LF) and neopterin (NT) are correlated with infection. The aim of this study is to determine whether serum levels of LF and NT are associated with postoperative infectious complications in patients with acute traumatic spinal cord injury. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 268 patients with acute traumatic spinal cord injury who underwent ...

The Clinical Significance of Serum and Urinary Neopterin Levels in Several Renal Diseases

Neopterin is a pyrazino-pyrimidine compound, and is known to be a marker associated with cell-mediated immunity in various diseases. We hypothesized that the levels of serum and urine neopterin would be elevated in renal disease, and would correlate with certain clinical parameters. We evaluated serum and urinary neopterin levels in patients with several renal diseases, including nephrotic synd...

Changes in serum neopterin and serum beta 2-microglobulin in subjects with lung infections.

Our aim was to investigate whether serum neopterin and beta 2-microglobulin have any value in the distinction between Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) and pneumonia due to extracellular bacteria. Also, to study whether neopterin and beta 2-microglobulin would correlate with the clinical course of lung infections in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive and HIV-negative patients. Thirt...

Interferon- Gamma- Inducible Guanosine Triphosphate Cyclohydrolase 1 (GTP-CH1) Pathway Is Associated with Frailty in Egyptian Elderly

Background: Chronic low-grade inflammation may be a cardinal pathophysiologic feature in the pathogenesis of frailty. Interferon-gamma (INF-γ) is an understudied proinflammatory cytokine in frailty that induces many inflammatory pathways including the guanosine triphosphate cyclohydrolase 1 (GTP-CH1) pathway. Our aim was to evaluate the GTP-CH1 pathway in Egyptian frail elderly subjects. ...
